Chimney Fire Prevention Safety Tips from the Boonton Township Fire Prevention
Why Inspections Matter:
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211) recommends that chimneys, fireplaces, and
vents be inspected at least once per year. Regular inspections help prevent chimney fires, carbon
monoxide hazards, and structural damage.
When Should a Chimney Be Cleaned?
• If creosote or soot buildup is present.
• If debris, nests, or blockages are found.
• After a chimney fire.
• If you notice smoke backing up into your home.
How Often Should a Chimney be Cleaned?
Frequency depends on how often you burn wood or use your fireplace. Heavy use may require cleaning more than once per year. Light use may only require annual inspection with cleaning.
Safety Tips for Homeowners
• Only burn seasoned hardwood.
• Never use flammable liquids to start a fire.
• Install carbon monoxide detectors.
• Have your chimney inspected by a qualified professional.

The Boonton Township Police Department would like to take this opportunity to share important information about new e-bike laws in New Jersey.
On January 19, 2026, Governor Phil Murphy signed a new law to address serious injuries and deaths related to e-bike crashes. The law is now in effect. (Stand-up electric scooters are not included.)
What Changed?
The old Class 1/2/3 system has been removed. E-bikes are now regulated under three categories:
· Low‑Speed Electric Bicycle: Two‑wheeled, fully operable pedals; pedal‑assist only; assistance stops at 20 mph (no throttle‑only propulsion in this definition).
· Motorized Bicycle: Expanded to include certain electric bikes (and traditional <50cc mopeds). Includes electric options with throttle (up to 28 mph) and faster pedal‑assist (21–28 mph) as defined in Title 39.
· Electric Motorized Bicycle: Two‑wheeled with pedals; electric motor >750 watts and capable of >28 mph. Treated as a motorcycle category under Title 39 (highest regulatory burden).
Who Can Operate an E-Bike?
· Under 15: Not permitted
· Ages 15–16: Motorized bicycle license or permit required
· Age 17+: NJ driver’s license OR motorized bicycle license/permit required
· All e-bikes: Registration and liability insurance required
Grace Period
· 6 months to obtain proper licensing, registration, and insurance
· 1-year waiver of licensing and registration fees
There is also a one-year ban on online sales of the highest-speed category and a ban on modification kits that increase speed or power.
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission is still developing procedures for registration and licensing. Please watch for additional guidance.
Community and youth safety is our top priority. We encourage families to review these requirements and reinforce safe riding habits, including helmet use and following traffic laws. We encourage parents to reach out to us directly if we can be of further support.
Thank you for your support in helping to keep our community and roadways safe.
