A Message From the Boonton Township Police Department

Due to a recent string of motor vehicle burglaries in the Township, the Boonton Township Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind our residents to remain vigilant and take the necessary steps to protect your valuables at all times. Over the course of the past few weeks, police have responded to numerous calls involving vehicles which have been burglarized in town. Although some arrests have been made, other incidents are still under investigation.

Burglars are aware of the fact that it may be convenient to leave your wallet, purse, or other belongings in your vehicle. If you are unable to bring your personal items inside with you for any reason, we encourage you to store them in your glove compartment or locked trunk, as valuables laying in plain view are likely to attract a potential burglar. Several recent burglaries in town involved smashed windows due to the fact that valuables were left in plain view. As always, please remember to lock your vehicles in public and at your homes as well. The overwhelming majority of break-ins typically occur with unlocked vehicles.

Also, if you own a “push start” type vehicle, please be conscious of where you leave your key-fob. Many of these new keyless entry vehicles only require the key-fob to be within a certain distance of the vehicle in order for the vehicle to start or unlock. It also is a good idea to be aware of where you leave your garage door opener remotes. Leaving these remotes in an unlocked car allow potential burglars access to your garage and possibly the interior of your home as well.

The burglaries have typically been occurring in the driveways of private residences, and several have been at our Township’s public recreation areas. It is typically common knowledge that visitors to our parks and recreation areas may be tempted to leave valuables behind in their vehicles. Anyone with information can contact the Boonton Township Detective Bureau at 973-402-4022. Residents can also visit www.btpolice.org and submit an anonymous tip to the Boonton Township Detective Bureau.

Residents can also leave a tip through the Morris County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers program by visiting www.copcall.org. Residents can also call 973-COP-CALL or use the free “P3 Tips” app on any mobile device to submit a crime stoppers tip. You may remain completely anonymous.
