Boonton Township Trivia

Each week we will include a fun fact or historic tidbit about our great hometown

The May 9, 1952 edition of the Township Newsletter, Valley News was devoted to the overcrowding at the Powerville School and detailed the plans for the school addition. The 1870 and the 1926 schoolhouses on the site were overcrowded requiring the Township to construct a three classroom addition. The referendum took place on May 20, 1952 which passed as the addition was constructed at a cost of $88,000.

The former Powerville School now serves as our Municipal Building. The entire edition is on file in the Clerk's Office if you interested in reading the full text.

National Immunization Awareness Month

August is recognized as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), an annual reminder to highlight the importance of vaccination for those of all ages. This helps to ensure that everyone remains healthy and protected against serious illness and disease. With COVID-19 having disrupted both in-person learning, as well as routine vaccination visits, it is vital to check with your doctor about any routine vaccines your child may have missed. If you choose to delay, skip, or reject all or some vaccines entirely, there can be serious risks. This decision comes with an important responsibility to protect your child’s life or the life others in your family and community. Here are some reasons why it’s important to keep your family’s shots on track:

The CDC offers an Interactive Vaccine Guide that can be used to stay up-to-date with your child’s vaccinations from infanthood to adulthood; https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/growing/images/global/CDC-Growing-Up-with-Vaccines.pdf

BOONTON TOWNSHIP CANNABIS ORDINANCES

in a nutshell

On August 9, 2021 the Township Committee adopted three ordinances relating to the regulation of cannabis in the Township. Here’s what you need to know.

The State Legislature enacted the recreational cannabis law that established six classes of cannabis licenses which municipalities must consider permitting in their community: 1) cultivation, 2) manufacturing/processing, 3) wholesale, 4) distribution, 5) retail and 6) delivery.

Two ordinances adopted by the Township address regulation and prohibition of cannabis. The Township now prohibits all six cannabis licenses in all zones throughout the Township, except that four of those licenses: cultivation, manufacturing/processing, wholesale and distribution, will be permitted only at the existing state-licensed medical cannabis facility at 130 Old Denville Road. Retail sales and delivery are prohibited from the site.

Neither ordinance authorized the expansion of the current operation at the Old Denville Road site. If the property owner of that site wants to expand its operation, a site plan application must be filed before the Planning Board with a public hearing.

The third ordinance revised our alcoholic consumption ordinance to include cannabis and prohibit public cannabis consumption anywhere in the Township, except at a private residence, which is permitted by law.

If the Township failed to adopt theses ordinances by August 21, 2021 (state-imposed deadline), we would have forfeited the right to zone for and restrict these types of business activities anywhere in the Township for five years.
