Green Challenge for April

PLANT A TREE

(or donate towards the planting of a tree)

This year’s Arbor Day is April 27.  Trees are important for a healthy ecosystem.  Trees help reduce soil erosion and sediment in streams.  A tree’s shade can significantly reduce your air-conditioner use in the summer.  In the winter evergreen trees can block wind, which lessen heat loss from your house.  Of course, besides absorbing carbon and producing oxygen, trees are just a great way to attract wildlife and promote a sense of relaxation.  Recent storms took out a lot of our trees.

A few tips for tree planting:

Dig a hole wider than the root ball, but not deeper.

Do not over amend planting hole soil- you want roots to spread horizontally

Do not plant a tree too close to house or power lines.

While Bradford pears have great white flowers, they often split and are weak in storms.

If planting a burlap balled tree, loosen burlap and have none of material above ground.
