Horse

by Geraldine Brooks

A discarded painting in a junk pile, a skeleton in an attic, and the greatest racehorse in American history: from these strands, a Pulitzer Prize winner braids a sweeping story of spirit, obsession, and injustice across American history

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

New York City, 1954. Martha Jackson, a gallery owner celebrated for taking risks on edgy contemporary painters, becomes obsessed with a nineteenth-century equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance.

Washington, DC, 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, a Nigerian-American art historian, find themselves unexpectedly connected through their shared interest in the horse--one studying the stallion's bones for clues to his power and endurance, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success.

Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington, Horse is a novel of art and science, love and obsession, and our unfinished reckoning with racism.

I ended up picking February…something that will be outside our (I know mine) comfort zones because the reviews are amazing!!

So for February we will meet in the Town Hall Library February 14 at 7pm to discuss (we might change that date as it is Valentine’s Day, we can discuss in January):

Remarkably Bright Creatures

Shelby Van Pelt

4.47 · Rating details · 70,151 ratings · 11,028 reviews

For fans of A Man Called Ove, a charming, witty and compulsively readable exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope, tracing a widow's unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus.

After Tova Sullivan's husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she's been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.

Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn't dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors--until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova's son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it's too late.

Shelby Van Pelt's debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.

Holiday fire safety tips

The winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together.

It’s always fun to decorate for the winter holidays and to cook special meals, but holiday decorations and cooking can increase your risk for a home fire.

As you deck the halls this season or fix a festive meal, please be smart about fire safety.

Be careful with your holiday decorations. Make sure they don’t block windows and doors. Additionally, following these few steps can help make your holidays fire-safe.

Cooking is the main cause of home fires and injuries no matter the season. From frying your to making pies, be sure to follow these rules to prevent cooking fires.

We hope that you all enjoy the holiday season and think fire safety.

A Message From the Boonton Township Police Department

Happy Holidays and a Safe & Healthy New Year from BTPD

The Boonton Township Police Department would like to wish all of our residents a happy and safe holiday season. The month of December typically marks one of the most festive times of the year. We'd like to take this opportunity to remind all our residents to exercise extra caution on the roadways, and please do not drink and drive. Some of the latest data shows that In December of 2020, traffic crashes involving an impaired driver killed 937 people. Making a plan for a safe, sober ride home is critical to saving lives this holiday season. This new data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also revealed the following alarming statistics:

Driving impaired by any substance – alcohol or other drugs, whether legal or illegal – is against the law in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. To prevent unnecessary tragedies, the Boonton Township Police Department urges everyone to plan ahead, especially when celebrating the holidays, and to never drive drunk or high. Instead, designate a sober driver, use public transportation, or call a ride-hailing service or a taxi to make sure you get home safely. As always, our officers will be working around the clock this holiday season, ensuring that the residents of Boonton Township remain safe. If you see an impaired driver on the road, call 911.

We hope that 2023 is a safe, happy, and healthy year for all of our residents here in the Township.

We hope that you all continue to enjoy the holiday season, and we are looking forward to what the new year has in store.
