Road Work!
Beginning on May 27th, 2025, crews are scheduled to begin natural gas installation on River Road near Rockaway Valley Road. This utility work has the potential to cause intermittent traffic delays for drivers who are traveling eastbound or westbound on Rockaway Valley Road.
The utility crew will then continue the installation on River Road and proceed throughout the Oak Hills neighborhood. This work has the potential to last several weeks and may cause traffic delays or detours within the Oak Hills neighborhood. Residents of River Road, Sunrise Road, Forrest Road, Berton Road, Overlook Road and Rosewood Lane should plan for extra travel time until the completion of this project.
BTPD will have officers on scene each day assisting motorists with any traffic-related issues.

BTPD LAUNCHES BICYCLE SAFETY CAMPAIGN
Statistically each year, June through September are proven to have the highest rate of crashes and other traffic incidents involving bicycles. This summer, BTPD will be launching a public safety campaign which aims to keep our bicyclists and motorists safe as they share the roadway. BTPD will have dedicated officers, both in patrol vehicles and on patrol bicycles, ensuring that our bicyclist and motorists are adhering to all applicable traffic laws as they navigate our roadways here in Boonton Township.
New Jersey traffic laws note that every person riding a bicycle on a roadway must comply with all the general rights and responsibilities of a motor vehicle driver (NJSA39:4-14.1). (This includes the Stop and Stay Stopped Law and other laws that protect vulnerable users such as pedestrians.) Our laws also dictate that bicyclists remain on the furthest right side of the road and not ride side by side when other vehicles are present in the lane of travel. Additionally, the law notes that when passing vulnerable road users, drivers must approach with due caution, change lanes or pass with 4 feet of space if possible, or otherwise slow to 25 mph and be prepared to stop (NJSA39:4-92.4). Please do your part and help us keep our roadways safe this summer!
The Boonton Township Police Department is also aware of a growing concern within our community pertaining to E-Bikes. This summer the Boonton Township Police Department will be joining with several community partners and will push out information within our community in order to help answer your questions and ensure that our roadways remain safe.
