Boonton Township Trivia

Each week we will include a fun fact or historic tidbit about our great hometown

the proposed Powerville Reservoir

In the aftermath of the disastrous flood of 1903 in northern New Jersey plans were made for a series of reservoirs and holding areas to contain future floodwaters. Once such proposed location was in Boonton Township at Powerville. Had the reservoir been constructed, most of the Township would now be underwater and the face of our community would be much different today...

The following is an excerpt from the report:

Powerville reservoir.—A short distance above Boonton the erection of a comparatively small dam would flood a large, irregular, flat basin having an area of a little more than 4-1/2 square miles and extending up the Rockaway Valley to Rockaway Village, up Beaver Brook to Beech Glen, and north and south for considerable distances. The probable capacity of this reservoir has been estimated, and it is fairly certain that it is considerably more than would be sufficient for flood catchment. Its construction would, moreover, improve the entire valley and be of advantage to many interests.

The northern New Jersey flood commission has selected for investigation a reservoir site on Rockaway River at Powerville. By the erection of a dam across the stream at this point, 28 feet in height and 470 feet long, a reservoir 4.6 square miles in area, with a capacity of 1,565,000,000 cubic feet, would be afforded. The drainage area above this point is 114 square miles. The cost of such a reservoir is estimated at $600,000.

North from Powerville, near the confines of the proposed Powerville reservoir, there is an available reservoir site along Stony Brook. By the erection of a dam 1,100 feet long and 120 feet high a lake would be formed 645 acres in extent, which would serve as a flood-catchment basin and a compensating reservoir. This reservoir would hold approximately 850,000,000 cubic feet. The construction of a reservoir at this place offers no engineering difficulties, and the project may be regarded as extremely favorable.

Dixons Pond, west of Rockaway Valley and northwest of Powerville, is a small sheet of water which lies in a valley which might be flooded to a greater height. By the erection of a dam 450 feet long and 30 feet high a lake of 136 acres would be created, which would form a part of the flood catchment and compensating service.

Road Work!

Farber Hill Road Closed for Utility Work

Beginning on Wednesday 7/23/2025, Farber Hill Road will be closed to all thru-traffic between the hours 7:30am and 5:30pm. This closure is in response to a utility project which requires roadway opening. The project is expected to last between four to five weeks, and crews will have the roadway closed daily, with the exceptions of Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Residents of Miller Drive, Decker Lane, and Wetmore Drive are encouraged to enter and exit their neighborhoods via Wetmore Drive and Rockaway Valley Road to avoid delays. Residents of Twin Hills Drive and Eagle Rock Drive will have access to their respective neighborhoods, but should expect traffic delays.

Oak Hills Utility Work

All thru-traffic will be directed through a brief detour which consists of Rockaway Valley Road to Split Rock Road. BTPD will have officers on scene each day to assist motorists as needed. We would like to thank everyone in advance for their cooperation as we work to improve our roadways and utilities.

Beginning on May 27th, 2025, crews are scheduled to begin natural gas installation on River Road near Rockaway Valley Road. This utility work has the potential to cause intermittent traffic delays for drivers who are traveling eastbound or westbound on Rockaway Valley Road.

The utility crew will then continue the installation on River Road and proceed throughout the Oak Hills neighborhood. This work has the potential to last several weeks and may cause traffic delays or detours within the Oak Hills neighborhood. Residents of River Road, Sunrise Road, Forrest Road, Berton Road, Overlook Road and Rosewood Lane should plan for extra travel time until the completion of this project.

BTPD will have officers on scene each day assisting motorists with any traffic-related issues.
